IFSU-OFPHIL EYE CENTER FINALLY OPENED FOR PATIENT CARE

The inhabitants in the province of Ifugao and the neighboring provinces in the Cagayan Valley region including Nueva Viscaya and the Mountain Province will be enjoying the benefit of modern eye care starting in 2010. This is made possible by the initiative of three institutions: the government of Ifugao Province represented by Ifugao Provincial Board member, Dr Joseph Odan, Congressman Solomon Chungalao of the district of Ifugao, and President Serafin Ngohayon of the Ifugao State University (IFSU) ; the Ophthalmological Foundation of the Philippines (OFPHIL) headquartered in Manila and headed by its Chairman of the Board, Mr. Oscar M. Lopez; and Restoring Sight International (RSI) in Boston, represented and headed by its Founder and President, Felipe I. Tolentino, MD, Chairman of the Board, Roland E Houle, MD and Lourdes Flaminiano, MD, Vice President and Treasurer.

On January 26 this year, the IOEC Ifugao State University (IFSU) / Ophthalmological Foundation of the Philippines (OFPHIL) Eye Center built in the beautiful campus of IFSU in the Municipality of Alfonso Lista in Ifugao Province was inaugurated and opened for outpatient eye care. This event was well attended by more than 150 guests. High ranking provincial government officials from Ifugao and neighboring provinces as well as officers of OFPHIL from Manila and RSI officers from Boston, Massachusetts, USA were in attendance.

During the week of the inauguration, over one hundred eye patients were screened and more than 50 patients were diagnosed to have cataract blindness. OFPHIL Administrator, Carla V. Lopez reported that as soon as the eye center’s operating room facilities have been approved by the local and national health authorities, cataract surgery will be performed on those wait listed patients as expeditiously as possible.

The idea of an outpatient eye care center in the province of Ifugao was conceived in 2005 when Dr. Jesse Caguiao, former Executive Director of OFPHIL asked for a meeting with OFPHIL President Felipe I. Tolentino to convey the request of his colleague, Dr Joseph Odan to set up an eye center in Ifugao to serve the large number of cataract blind patients in Ifugao and Cagayan Valley.

FAMOUS FILIPINO ARTISTS CONDUCT ART SALE TO BENEFIT IFUGAO EYE CENTER PROJECT

February 3, 2010 was an auspicious day for the indigent people of Ifugao and its neighboring provinces which have the highest incidence of cataract blindness in the Philippines. This fund raiser is for the benefit of IOEC (Ifugao State University- Ofphil Eye Center) located in the municipality of Alfonso Lista, Ifugao.

Under the leadership of Mrs. Betsy Westendorp, a famous Spanish-Filipino artist residing in the Philippines, this highly successful fund raiser was held in the beautiful Manila Polo Club premises in Makati City, Philippines. This fund raiser was participated by many of Mrs. Westendorp’s artist friends who donated the proceeds from the sales of their paintings to the Ophthalmological Foundation of the Philippines (OFPHIL) and be used exclusively for the eye care of indigent patients seeking treatment in the new Eye Center. The event was attended by over a hundred art aficionados from the Philippines and raised over two million pesos or around 50,000 US dollars. This project was conducted with the help of the Philippine public relations firm of Ms. Jingjing Romero who donated her services to OFPHIL.
